I'm so excited (and a little terrified) to announce the launch of Burst's first competition, giving children in Caerphilly County the chance to get creative for World Book Day and design two new book characters for an early readers series to be set in Caerphilly Castle.
Burst will be commissioning a professional artist to adapt the winning design into illustrations for the first book, which will be written in English but introduce Welsh words and phrases through a Welsh-speaking character - and (fingers crossed) be published later this year.
My terror is down to the unknown; whether anyone will enter the competition or whether we'll find the perfect characters to tell some great stories and engage young readers ... and of course whether anyone will buy the book when it is produced. But mainly I'm overjoyed - to be living the dream of providing opportunities for children to get inspired and get creative with a purpose. And I can't wait to see what amazing characters they come up with ... I have a feeling it's going to be a tough call to choose an overall winner.
Joining me on the judging panel will be Mike Mills from Oncocoa who will be kindly donating his time along with some yummy chocolate prizes! There will be book tokens for the category winners and runners-up too, as well as three Burst workshops up for grabs. The other judges on the panel will be announced soon.
You can find out more about the competition and all the T&Cs here.
I look forward to blogging updates on how it's going, and of course about the winning entries. In the meantime - spread the word!
